John Petrucci

Petrucci

He rests his pinky on the guitar.

So does Steve Morse...Doesn't seem to hurt them.

Yngwie Malmsteen

Yngwie Malmsteen

He does alternate picking AS WELL AS economy picking. How is that fair?

Do We Rest Our Pinky Or Palm On The Guitar?

Do We Rest Our Pinky Or Palm On The Guitar?

There are two schools of thought on that. Yes and No. Some people feel the pinky slows them down. Paul Gilbert doesn't rest HIS pinky on the guitar. Al Di Meola doesn't rest HIS pinky on the guitar. Both these guys are phenomenally accurate. I hate them.

Al Di Meola - Too Good At Picking?

Al Di Meola - Learned his guitar skills in New Jersey - yet somehow he's good.

Some of his songs are a bit 'exploratory'...even for guitarists. He rests his palm on the guitar and plays in a completely relaxed way. Yet he's totally precise and as quick as he wants to be. An absolute master of alternate picking and odd rhythms and time signatures. I hate him.

Paul Gilbert - He Picks From The Wrist

Paul Gilbert - He Picks from the wrist and is faster than anyone else...and better.

His string skipping abilities are also better than anyone else's. He even reveals to us how he does things...yet continues to be much better at them than us.

Alternate Picking - From The Wrist Or The Arm?

Alternate Picking - Why is it so hard?

Did I say hard? I meant impossible.
And what's all this stuff about "you have to pick from the wrist"?

Vinnie Moore doesn't pick from the wrist. He does it from the elbow. Good for him. Good for anyone who can make the impossible even MORE difficult.
